Art Loeb Trail
strenuous30.1-mile backpacking route — the premier long trail in the area. Can be done in sections. Black Balsam to Shining Rock is the classic day-hike segment.
Waterfall Safety
- NEVER climb on or above waterfalls — rocks are extremely slippery
- Stay behind railings and barriers at all viewing platforms
- Water temperature is cold year-round (45-60°F) — hypothermia risk
- Stream crossings can be dangerous after rain
- Weather changes rapidly at elevation — bring layers
